Like Windsor Great Park, Swinley Forest evolved from one of history’s largest Royal hunting grounds. The gently undulating landscape was perfect for this favourite Norman pastime … but the history of the area goes back much further.

The beginning of Swinley Forest

The oldest area of Swinley Forest is an Iron Age fort, known as ‘Caesar’s Camp’, which encompasses some 15 acres.

Despite the name, the earthworks have been dated to around 700BC, (650 years before Caesar reached British shores).

Although Roman soldiers did probably occupy the site later, the original architects were likely the Atrebatum Tribe, whose capital was Silchester.

Timber harvesting

Historically, the timber from these forests was used for ship construction and building.

Today though, the forest is managed by The Crown Estate under a multi-purpose policy – integrating the conservation of wildlife, timber production and public access.
